Dedication of Bell Garden
On Sunday, August 14, the recently completed Patty Miller Memorial Bell Garden at Heartland Center was dedicated. The bell comes from First Presbyterian Church of Topeka, Kansas. The garden is in honor of Patty Miller, a long time member of Second Presbyterian Church, Kansas City and a heartfelt supporter of Heartland Center.
Ms. Miller was active in her church and in the denomination for many years. She was instrumental, during her tenure as Moderator of Presbytery, in procuring support from Irene Nunnemaker to build the main conference facility on the campus. She also served on the Heartland Center Board of Directors on two different occasions. Patty was very supportive of the mission and ministry of the camp, and gave of her time and talents to help ensure its continuing growth and outreach.
Many thanks go to Craig Miller for financial support of the project. Thanks are also extended to Anne Hundley the landscape architect who design the garden and to several other volunteers who helped to install the bell.
The Bell Garden is quite beautiful; in addition to the bell, there is bench seating and a fire pit. It provides a place for respite, prayer and meditation. And, in contrast, it also provides an opportunity for youth and adults to ring the bell with wild abandon! Next time you are on our campus, please take time to visit the garden and experience this wonderful gift.
An Amazing Summer!
It was another great summer at Heartland Center fulfilling our mission to build relationships and impact lives in a Christ-centered environment. Another record number of campers participated in the many programs offered.
Campers Served: 2559
Traveling Day Camps Provided: 31 different locations
Again, the camp fielded a strong support system of 60 staff members and over 350 volunteers.
Comments about camp this summer:
"Something beautiful happens when a group of people start learning about Jesus amidst His incredible creation. The bonds that are made here really can't be described by words. They must be experienced."
"Again, I thank you so much for Heartland's dedication to the children and their faith journey. For some of the children we work with in the summer day camp, it is almost their only exposure to Christ, our Savior. That is one of the biggest reasons we keep doing the summer day camp. God bless you all!"
There is an opportunity here at Heartland Center for someone with food preparation experience to work in a Christian environment on a part-time basis. The position is Lead Kitchen Assistant. The job description and more information can be found at our Website (HeartlandCamps.org).
Campers are Saying...
I love it here. I look forward to camp every summer.
I learned that God loves us and gives us courage.
My counselors were great and taught me a lot about God. I had a ton of fun!
This week at camp was really awesome and really cool.
The best part of the week was: everything!
The food was almost as good as my mom's.
